SHORTHANDED, BANGED-UP MURPHY'S POUNDS PARK AMERICA INC., MOVES TO 4-0

LANGHORNE — Missing two starters, having at least two more starters banged up and spotting Park America Inc. a quick seven-run lead, the Murphy’s softball team’s prospects of remaining undefeated looked bleak.

Prospects smroshpects.

Murphys’ responded with 12 straight runs over the next two innings, riding the offensive surge to a 21-11 win in Game One at Core Creek Park and rode that momentum surge to a 20-13 victory in Game Two to remain undefeated on the season.

Evan “Moose Slayer” Christie had a monster day in going 6-for-8 with six RBIs and five runs scored and Kevin Maloney went 8-for-10 with six RBIs, seven runs and a three-run homer.
Dow 7-0 in the bottom of the second inning in the first game, T.J. Coles kicked the offense in gear with a one-out single.

Josh Yeager ripped an RBI single, Jay Dreyer followed with a single and Sean Walker worked a walk to load the bases for Christie, who lined a two-run single. Matt “Hollywood” Harker kept the rally going with a single and Maloney followed it up with a two-run double. Jimmy Trochak put his stamp on the seven-run frame with a sacrifice fly.

Murphy’s posted a five-spot in the third inning to take a 12-7 lead but Park America cut the difference to one with a four-run fifth inning.

Murphy’s broke the game open for good with an eight-run sixth inning in which the boys strung together nine hits and sent 12 batters to the plate.

Evan Christie went 6-for-8 with six RBIs to help
Murphy's to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Flipping the script from the first game, Murphy’s jumped out to a 9-0 lead going to the bottom of the third on the strength of a three-run first, a four-run second and a two-run third.

Harker led the game off with a double, moved to third on Maloney’s single and scored on Graham’s sacrifice fly. Maloney came around to score on Coles’ single and Joe Faust Jr. plated “The Dirt Monster” with a single.

Murphy’s used their second double-digit frame in as many weeks – a 10-run fourth – to build what proved to be an insurmountable 19-2 lead and got Moose and his boys’ panties all tied up in a bunch.
Maloney led off the fourth with a single came around to score from first on Graham’s double. Coles and Trochak followed with singles and Faust Jr. and Mike Faust worked back-to-back walks.

Yeager followed with an RBI single and Christie followed with his second two-run single on the day. Maloney capped the inning by driving a three-run homer to left-center field.

Park America responded with a seven-run bottom half of the inning and gained a little bit of momentum when the 5-foot-10, 140-pound “Moose Slayer” absolutely, positively tried to take out the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Moose on a play at the plate. Ha ha.

But Murphy’s flashed enough defense down the stretch to hold on for the seven-run win.

Maloney went 4-for-5 in game two and Graham (3-for-4, two runs, three RBIs), Coles (3-for-5, two runs, two RBIs), Faust Jr. (3-for-3, two runs, two RBIs), Walker (3-for-4, three RBIs, run) and Christie (3-for-4, two runs, two RBIs) all contributed three-hit games.

Murphy’s is back in action this Sunday morning at 9 when they take on Stadium Huskies (1-3)

at Core Creek Park (back field). Stadium Huskies split with Park America in Week One and fell to Cosmos Restaurant & Bar, 17-11 and 20-19, last weekend.
